  FIRST LADIES OF THE POSTER
by Laura Gold
160 pages, 206 full-color posters

The Gold Collection presents women stepping out of the traditional roles and exercising their new-found liberation.  It is the time of the Industrial Revolution, and we find the women, newly released from the home (via the bicycle) anxious to simulate the images shown in the posters.  It was the beginning of the age of consumerism...and right alongside that, the explosion of advertising.

All the top artists of the 'belle epoque' are featured.  This is the time when posters were all the rage and this book is awash with splendid images and vibrant colors.  It is a window into a bygone era where a world of possibilities was just beginning to reveal itself to the women who craved an expanded role in society.

Available through the Poster Art Library or contact us via our e-mail or phone.

The following is from a recent letter received from a client:

Laura Gold, owner of Park South Gallery at Carnegie Hall consistently carries antique posters of rare quality at fair prices.  She is most knowledgeable, reliable, and pleasant to deal with.  My design clients, after their first experience, have asked to go back to Mrs. Gold to expand their collections.

Title: Cafe Jacqmotte
Artist:  Fernand Toussaint (1873-1955)
Year:  1896
Size: 34 1/2 x 43 1/2"

The painter Toussaint did few posters, but they were some of the very best of the era.  Here is an example of his very best.  The intricate printing by the master O. de Rycker in Brussels adds to the exceptional quality of this design.  In excellent color, and very good condition (very, very slight folds).  This is an extremely rare and beautiful image.
